Based on the negative, original critical reviews of this album, I avoided it for a long time. After years of listening to and loving the companion album, Reckoning, which features the same line-up and was recorded at the same shows (Reckoning was all acoustic songs), and which features sparkling sound quality, I finally decided to give Dead Set a try. I have to say it did not disappoint. Once again - great sound quality, but also great electric Dead! The knock on this album from the start was that all of the songs are short and disconnected, not the extended improvisation or song segues that the Dead were known for. I get it that there are better live Dead shows available from all eras, in soundboard quality and with all of the adventurousness their live shows had - indeed I have many of these. But there is also a place for this album, full of tight, tasty versions of so many favorites, those having been cherry-picked from this series of shows. This is some of my favorite Brent-era Dead. What''s more, this expanded version includes many songs from the same shows that stretch beyond the 4 to 7 minute range of the original cuts - several in the 10 minute range on the extra disc, for those that feel cheated by the short-but-sweet cuts of the original. If you love the Dead, this expanded/remastered Dead Set is worth the price.

hairy scary space before Fire on the Mountain out. If you are old and had the LP version, this really blew big time.
This version has the tracks as the were on the LP. Plus a second disc with some good stuff culled from the fall of 1980,
most from the California shows at the Warfield. I read somewhere that the master reels from most of these fall shows
from Radio City & the Warfield were taped over at some point, kind of too bad. I saw some other summer & fall 1980
shows & the Grateful Dead were playing some nice stuff during that period, Uncle John''s Band was back, & the China Cat
Sunflower/ I Know You Rider''s were pretty searing way to close the 1st sets...

Dead Set has always been "good". However, this edition is "spectacular". The mix is spot on, as the drums snap at you, the guitar soars, and the vocals for the most part are some of the best. But what makes this edition super special is the second CD of more live cuts not on the original album. I actually think the bonus material may be slightly better than the original material. A combined 150+ minutes of live Dead; can it get any better?

Everyone knows the original Dead Set release. Not much more to say about disc 1. Disc 2 is the reason to buy this set: eleven bonus tunes from the same concerts. It includes fan favorites like Sugaree and ShakeDown Street but also throws in some less familiar tunes, such as their version of CC Rider (the tune Elvis Presley opened his concerts with over much of the ‘70s). Very reasonably priced (some of the Rhino releases with bonus tracks are almost impossible to find at any price, even on Amazon). Recommended for the fan who likes early Brent.

We''ve all had "Dead Set" for years, and, let''s be honest, it''s a pretty "ho hum" affair for a Dead fan. However, here comes the re-issue with a second disc, and WHOA!! THIS IS GOOD STUFF!! Not the short, jam-free recordings on the original disc, but rather excellent versions of many songs. For example, there are fantastic versions of "Sugaree," "Row Jimmy" "Shakedown Street," and -- my favorite from this disc -- a great, great version of "High Time," all with pristine, outstanding recording quality. These are full-length songs, folks, and great versions at that. 5 stars for disc 2.

As someone who just 12 months ago knew nothing about this band, (I knew they were a band yet for some reason I always thought they were mordernish, like the Stone Roses in style!!!), I know adored these guys. They are, quite simply, the best live act i''ve ever heard. I now have every ''official'' live release from the band as well as a few of the archive releases. I bought with trepidation this and ''Reckoning'' as I gear towards 70''s albums and not 1980''s and some of the reviews surrounding this particular album weren''t too great, (as always though, don''t listen to people and critics - it''s down to everyones taste. I personally think giving this album less than 4 stars is insane, especially given the general acclaim aimed at ''With a Net''; this is far superior. For those of you who don''t know, this album was released in 1981, just after ''Reckoning''. It captured the post Godcheaux Dead on fine form. It''s the electric brother to the aforementioned album. This is by far their most ''upbeat'' and ''uptempo'' album. Great sound, (occasionally the odd vocal is quite against the instruments yet this is neither here nor there), fab playing, especially Jerry''s guitar, as well as great vocals. It contains a great selection of songs. This album is similiar to the great ''Steal Your Face'', (again, don''t listen to the critics, there''s nothing wrong with that album), however, the band aren''t as ''tight'' and there''s more jamming, (nothing like the earlier stuff though, justy general extended solo''s etc). There are some really rocking tracks, such as ''Passenger'' and ''Greatest Story Ever Told'', two fab album songs in a slowed down different version of ''Friend of the Devil'', (it is different yet trust me - it works), as well as the mourneful ''Brokedown Palace'', (Jerry''s vocals are so melancholy and I love that moment where Brent does a little keyboard stuff followed by a little soft solo by Jerry. This album also contains what I regard to be one of Bob''s finest vocals, (he lets rip and loose - very gruff), as well as one of the finest guitar part Jerry''s played, (I friggin love that moment Bob sings about how the ''Dog''s begin to bark and the hounds begin to howl'' followed by Jerry mimicking a howl via slide guitar...heaven!! For those who are only interested in one or two Dead live albums obviously stick to ''Europe 72'' or ''Skull and Roses'', however, for those who want to hear more live Dead and already have those albums or for those curious about this one, buy it. I liked it the first time, yet by the 3rd time a loved it. I''ve given it a 5...it is probably a 4.5, yet as there isn''t an option for this, I rounded up :)
